12th century turnshoe (hands - on) pattern drafting with construction and leather demonstration/discussion. $5.00 fee if student doesn't bring their own felt for draping and cardboard for patterning. $2.00 if they bring felt and cardboard. Class runs approximately 8 hours, bring lunch as we won't be breaking. Pattern drafting will be in the morning only (9am to 1pm). This class is designed to explore small scale Dark Age and early Medieval European bronze casting techniques in clay moulds. Students will be involved in building the hearths for melting and firing, making crucibles, models, moulds, and melting/pouring bronze.

This is an advanced, adult class and a general knowledge of metalworking and casting is preferred. Bring work garb as we will be digging clay, pouring hot wax, working with charcoal, and setting things on fire.

Students will be able to choose from existing models for casting belt fittings, brooches, or chest hardware in 2-piece clay moulds. Everyone leaves with a finished product.

There is a $10.00 materials fee. Schedule may be altered slightly depending on the weather. Lectures and observations are open to all, but casting participation is limited to 5 students.

Combat Archery Crossbow and Bolt Construction (2 hr)

A review of various styles of combat crossbows from which the Prescott AS42 combat crossbow was designed and produced. There will be several examples of the design in various stages of production for the students to study. Drawings of the crossbow will be provided to each attendee that will enable them to construct their own. Construction of the Calontir standard crossbow tennis ball and tube bolt will be discussed, and each student will construct one or more bolts. A drawing for one complete crossbow and 5 bolts will be held at the end of the class.

Construction of a Two-Strap Medieval Bridle (2 hr)

This will be a class on how to construct a two-strap bridle that would have been used from the 1100s on past the 1600s. When you leave the class, you will have a working bridle to take home, decorate, put a bit on, and use on your horse.

What to Bring:
Bring your working bridle or measurements from the corner of the horse's mouth, over the poll and to the other corner of the mouth for the cheekpiece strap and the measurement around the horse's brow and throatlatch area for the browband/throatlatch strap. Add 4" to the cheekpeice measurement and 6" to the browband/throatlatch measurement. Put all four measurements on one peice of paper. Better too long than too short. It would also be helpful (but not necessary) if students could bring leatherworking tools, including leather punches, shaving tools, and a beveling tool.

This class introduces the Japanese art of making mawatas, which are stretched silk cocoons used for making a spun yarn called tsumugi. When finished, mawatas can be dyed, and all drafting of the fiber is done prior to spinning, making it a very fun and easy introduction to fiber arts. Even if you have no experience with fiber, don't be afraid to join us! You'll leave class with a stack of ten mawatas.

You can read both that clothes were drab in the Middle Ages and that they were brightly colored. This class addresses colors in the Middle Ages, particularly what evidence we have for those colors: the colors their dyes produced, the availability of those dyes, the colors that painters could create, and color terminology that affects looking at color in the literature. At the end I will touch on attitudes about color symbolism.

Some material and notions will be available for purchase for students who want a more hands-on experience, but this class does not require it. If you wish to supply your own materials, bring about 3 yards (for a dress or skirt) or 2 to 2.5 yards (for pants, tunic or skirt) of 45" wide cotton or other natural fabric, plus ribbon or cording for a drawstring and thread and needle.

This class is for people new to stained glass (or people who want to refresh skills). It will teach you the following basics: how to cut glass, how to shape your glass, how to pick your glass, how to stretch & cut lead came, how to put together & solder a project, and how to finish a piece. The fee will pay for as much practice glass as you need & materials for a small shield shaped stained glass piece (to be finished in class). The student will have the option to either:

1) Pick & cut their own colours of glass to assemble the piece (should take the full three hours-maybe more-for start to finished project) or
2) Choose from pre-cut glass pieces after learning how to cut glass & then assemble the piece (should take a maximum of two hours)

Sword Making Workshop (7hr)

Francis and Isen will attempt to reproduce the sword which Henry V is believed to have carried at Agincourt. This is a lot of heavy hammering and cannot be done alone. Strikers, both experienced and novice, are welcome. Come join in the process, learn the skills, and see a sword emerge from raw steel!

The workshop is expected to run for the majority of the War. Francis and Isen will produce as many swords as they can, probably 2 or 3. Participants need to be capable of swinging a 32 oz hammer accurately, understand and follow basic forge safety rules, and be willing to step aside when muscle fatigue reduces accuracy. Participants should expect to work in 1-hour shifts to minimize fatigue errors.

Theory and patterning/construction tips for making a pair of five-fingered leather gloves based on the gloves of St. Hadelin. Class will discuss construction theory based on an extant pair of gloves, as well as interpretation of images of gloves from manuscripts from 1250 - 1350. Types of leather suitable for glove making will be discussed, as will techniques for stitching. Patterns and gloves will not be made during the class itself, but the instructor will be available for the rest of the war if you would like to do some one-on-one pattern making. This will be a three panel around the table discussion about hollywood period costumes versus how they really were in period. We will have photos stills of movies and discuss the illusion versus the reality. It is hoped espicially for the beginning costumer how to recognize fact from hollywood costuming fiction so when the costumer constructs their project they will have some idea of proper period fabrics and accessories.

Part 1: The Temperaments and You. Everyone is inclined toward one of the four Temperaments; we will discuss the Temperament Theory and how to identify your own.

Part 2: Feeding Your Humours. A humourally balanced diet based on your personal Temperament is essential for maintaining health; we will discuss Humoural Theory and its relation to food preparation.
