Competitions

2nd Annual On-Site Embroidery Competition (2 hr)

Friday , June 18 - 6:00p.m.-8:00p.m.
Permanent Pavilion

Minimal Materials will be available. Needles, some thread and fabric. Additional tread or alternate fabric is allowed. All work must be done on site.

All entrants will receive the same design to work. Piece need not be completed to enter.

Design can be picked up starting on Sunday at the permanent shelter on the lake (Look for the rat). Pieces need to be turned in by 6:00p.m. on Friday at the permanent shelter.

This is on site embroidery competition. A standard pattern will be given. Only this design will be accepted and only embroidery will be accepted. Please do not enter knitting, weaving, leather work or any other craft medium.

All embroidery must be done on site. While some materials will be available you are not limited to these. You may use any fabric base as well as any thread you wish, keeping in mind that this is embroidery. You may use any embroidery stitches or techniques.

Piece may be turned in any time up to 6:00p.m. on Friday. 6:00p.m. is the cut off. Your piece need not be completed to enter.

The time and place of the judging will be determined later and communicated to all entrants.

Bardic Challenge (2 hr)

This competition is sponsored by the Calontir Bardic College. Bards entering this challenge are to create a piece about family.This could include sword brothers, the army, actual blood relatives, those you consider family, or SCA family. Contestants should have a second piece ready in case a decision can't be reached.

Calontir Royal Brewers Competition (1 hr)

Brewing competition to determine the Royal Brewer

Rules:
01. All recipes should be reproductions of period recipes or plausibly-period original recipes, and the entrant should be able to explain how their original recipe could have been developed in period.

02. Documentation is required and will be judged at the advanced level. Documentation should include: the country (or countries) of origin, period of origin, characteristics of style for that beverage. Entrants should exhibit a thorough knowledge or discussion of materials and ingredients used to complete the beverage and a thorough knowledge or discussion of methods used to make the beverage. Research and references should be included in the documentation, with complete sources and visual or descriptive references (period recipes). A bibliography allows the judges to determine the depth of the brewer's understanding of period brewing practices. Entrants who are not comfortable with written documentations should at least bring a bibliography of the resources used, recipe used, and be prepared to discuss the other information verbally.

03. A minimum of two and a maximum of three products must be submitted. At least two of the entries must be different types of beverage, for example: a beer and a wine, or two ciders and a mead, or an infusion, a beer, and hippocras. This is to show that the entrant has breadth of experience and can work with more than one kind of ingredient.

04. Products made from kits are discouraged. Beer/ale makers are encouraged to work from grain and wine/mead makers are encouraged to work from fruit as much as practical.

Kingdom Bardic Championship (3 hr)

This competition will determine Their Majesties Ollave (Royal Bard). Contestants must be Calontir citizens. Bring your best bardic work to Beach Friday night and be ready to perform after fireworks. The competition will be held at the fire pit.

Pre-prints may be picked up from Her Excellency, Mistress Roise on Tuesday after 9:00a.m. at the A&S Tent (see Roise anytime afterwards to get a pre-print if you miss her Tuesday). Completed pieces must be returned to the A&S tent no later than 3:00p.m. Thursday.

Rose in Any Medium (2 hr)

Fiber Tent

Create a project from raw wool (provided by the Barony of Lonely Tower). Entrants need to pick up the wool Sunday June 13 at the fiber tent. The completed (or partially) completed project must be returned to the fiber tent by Saturday, June 19 at 11:00a.m.. Project must be completed on site. The entrant will choose which level and type of Calontir criteria the judges will use.

NOTE: Calontir criteria provides for three levels of expertise: Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced. Contact Her Ladyship Thora for details. The winner of the Sheep to Shawl competition will be determined by judges' choice based on the entry's evaluation against criteria.

Sweets for the Sweet V (1 hr)

All sweet alcohols are eligible (cider, wine, mead, beer, even cordials and liquers). Judging will be based on taste (the target is sweet), period ingredients, and period brewing techniques. Minimum documentation is an ingredient list (in case of allergies amongst the judges). More documentation is encouraged. The prize is one hand-made 14th Century English table knife crafted by His Lordship Francis Bean.

His Lordship Chatus the Curious will be demonstrating candle making on Sunday, Wednesday and Saturday in the A&S area. This will be an all day demo and will be setup where space allows.

The Great Machine

Master Gerald Goodwine will be running his dog powered tread-wheel machine throughout the week.

Her Ladyship Johanne of Fisher Gate will be demonstrating tablet weaving off and on while the Fiber Tent is open.

Plus in the Fiber Arts Tent
At Lilies this year, the Fiber Guild will be making six painted, waterproof rugs to go under Their Majesties kneeling cushions at events. A table will be set up all week at the Fiber Guild tent for this activity. We would love to have populace participation. We will have the paints, brushes and materials set up for everyone's use. Come join us, when you have a spare moment, and help us create beautiful, utilitarian rugs to lay in front of the thrones.
