(1509 – 1547) TUDORS
-
Champion's "Battle of the 32"
Each Henry shall sponsor a lance of four combatants. Henry may participate as one of the four. This shall be a champion's field battle based on the "Battle of the 30," as held at Pennsic. All kits should be appropriate for the period of the king Henry you represent to the best of your ability. In essence you should look right for the time you represent.
Weapons will be as follows: two-handed swords between 44-50", not a sword that you can only grip the pommel with your second hands index finger and thumb; pole weapons that are 6' and under, be it a hammer, mace or axe and must be a two-handed weapon that look likes a medieval weapon; back-up weapons are limited to daggers and short swords only.
Ransoms will be limited to one. Bring a ransom that you feel is appropriate for your station (armor, rings, coins, garb, etc). Ransomed fighters will be marked so combatants will be aware of this.
If you are struck a "killing" blow per society rules or are physically driven to three points where one hand goes to the ground, and someone can lay their hand upon you they can capture you. You can be captured by anyone that can place their hand upon you after you are "killed/knocked down". If no one can get to you to capture you then you are not captured but must rise, declare yourself "re-setting" and continue with the fight. All legal target areas may be struck but the only blows that need to be acknowledged are "killing blows" per society rules.
Captured people must be lead off of the field by their captor. The captor must have a hand upon the prisoner at all times, however the prisoner may NOT try to elude the captor once captured. If the prisoner's team engages the captor and he lets go of the prisoner, the prisoner will stand off to the side until the combat is complete. If the Captor is defeated then the team may rescue their mate. If the Captor is victorious then he may gather his prisoner and continue to ransom. A captor can ONLY escort one prisoner at a time.
The only way you can return to the field after being ransomed is if the person that has captured you dies during the course of action.
To that end, the ways that you can die in this Deed are as follows:
Being ransomed once, OR being "killed" in the following manner 3 times:
Face thrust to any open faced helmet.
Thrust to the armpit, back of the thigh, or buttocks.
NOTE: The desire is to capture and ransom your opponents NOT kill them. They are worth no value to you dead.
Battle Name: Battle of Flodden Field (1513)
Battle Type: Field Battle (uses entire battlefield)
Actors: Henry VIII; Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey
vs. James IV of Scotland
Weapons Restrictions: Great Weapons (poles/spears) only
+ combat archery
Pre Battle Layout: Standard Field Battle
Battle Scenario: Standard Field Battle
Victory Conditions: Last Man Standing
Battle Name: Henry's Nightmare
Battle Type: Hay Bail Castle Battle with special resurrection rules
Actors: Henry VIII vs. undead wives/plague victims
Weapons Restrictions: undead get single handed weapons; Henry's men may fight with any weapon style
Pre Battle Layout: Henry and his forces (1/3 of the combatants) begin inside the fort; the other 2/3 start as undead outside
Battle Scenario: undead wives and plague victims get unlimited resurrections, die only to head shots, and fight from their knees to body shots – arm/leg shots are ignored. If Henry's men die, they join the undead outside the castle
Victory Conditions: last man standing
Henry the 8th was obsessive compulsive about cleanliness and fear of getting sick. He was well known to purchase ointments, oils, and Humors to ward against infection. During outbreaks of the Plague he locked himself up in the Castle, refusing anyone entrance for fear of infection.
Also he was plagued by the thoughts that his marriage to his Brother's wife Catherine of Aragorn was sacrilege. He feared that his Brother had consummated the marriage before his death, making his marriage to Catherine against God and Church.
Henry VIII had 6 wives, Anne Bolyne, Jayne Seymour, and Catherine Howard all died by his hand or died during their marriage to him. (Bolyne and Howard were beheaded by him and Seymour died during child birth). Even though he beheaded 2 of his wives, he had all but 2 of his marriages annulled first.
So, "Henry's Nightmare" is set up as a "nightmare" about his 3 dead wives coming back from the grave to kill him during the outbreak of the plague. Henry would hold up in his castle with his armed forces against the undead "plague" lead by his 3 undead wives.
Battle Name: Battle of the Spurs (1513)
Battle Type: Single Sword, Resurrection Battle
Actors: Henry VIII vs. Louis XII of France
Weapons Restrictions: single swords of approximately 3' in length

- The Pas of the Tree of Thorns
Sponsor: Sir Reimond of Ipstones
Sunday, June 13 - 2:00p.m.-4:00p.m.
Tourney Field
In ancient times, Scottish seer True Thomas prophesied that, "As long as the Thorn Tree stands; Ercildourne shall keep its lands." It now seems that his prophesy shall be tested.
The Laird of Ercildourne has died, leaving only an adopted daughter as his heir. Alas, a challenger appeared to lay claim to these lands, the neighboring Laird Onchu mac Corc. In addition to challenging her inheritance, he also swore that he had claim to lands held in common by the Merchants of Ercildourne. The Lady of Ercildourne accused Onchu of heresy, for false swearing his claim upon sacred relics. She also swore upon sacred relics the rightness of her claim and of her accusation, and in return Laird Onchu demanded a trial by combat to settle the matter.
The King hath granted Laird Onchu his trial, but with one condition: that since he hath laid claim to both Lady Ercildourne's inheritance and the lands held in common by the Merchants, both the Merchants and Lady Ercildourne will summon champions to fight on their behalf in an arranged battle with equal champions on each side.
Lady Ercildourne hath summoned her lover, Sir Reimond of Ipstones, to lead a company of nine hand-picked men to defend her rights. Sir Reimond has seen fit in his wisdom and with the approval of the Merchants to choose their champions from among all challengers, at the Pas of the Tree of Thorns.
The Company of the Thorns shall, at the end of the Pas, pick from among those participating on the Five Fields of Honor, champions to join with the Company to stand against Laird Onchu. In return for their service, the companions shall all be granted lands and rents held in fealty from Lady Ercildourne.
Then, the Company of the Thorns shall take the field of battle against Laird Onchu mac Corc and all of his followers. Should the day belong to the Company of the Thorns, then the Lady of Ercildourne shall maintain her lands in their entirety. Should the day belong to Laird Onchu and all of the Company of the Thorns shall lie slain, then Lady Ercildourne shall forthwith be sent under guard to the headsman, for her false swearing and heresy!
Will you join this noble endeavor and spare the Lady while gaining your own reknown? Meet at the Battlefield after the battles at the hour of two for a noble Pas celebrating Sir Reimond's first anniversary of his Knighting.
The ten Tenans will hold five fields of honor for about an hour. At the end of that period they will choose those champions of the town to fight with them in a final melee.
Please contact Sir Reimond in person if you are interested in participating.
